Dramatic advances in brain-science research over the last 20 years has led to insights and implications for increasingly wider areas of our society – politics, business and most intriguingly, education.

Susan Greenfield has worked actively with government over the years, advising on various matters relating to science and its impact on the future of our society.

Speeches to the Lords

As a House of Lords peer, Susan has delivered various speeches to the Lords on subjects from education, the NHS and stem cells, to innovation, women’s issues and the effects of technology.

Science, education and wider policy

In 1999, Susan presented the Millennium Seminar to Prime Minister Tony Blair on the future of science. Subsequently, she was invited to Number 11 to deliver a speech to the then Chancellor Gordon Brown.

Susan currently co-chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Scientific Research in Learning and Education.

Parliamentary Activities

Established in 2006, the APPG’s goal is to explore ways of incorporating the growing body of scientific knowledge on learning and development into a more evidence-informed education policy and practice.

Its most crucial area – the influence of information technologies in the way young people think, learn and behave.

International outreach

As well her work with the UK government, Susan is also involved in many outreach activities overseas. In particular, she is trustee of the Cyprus Institute and the Alexandrian Library in Egypt.

In 2004 and 2005, Susan worked with the Australian government as one of the Adelaide Thinkers in Residence and in 2011, she joined the Advisory Board of the Kusuma School of Biological Sciences at the Indian Institute for Technology, Delhi

Susan is also a co-founder and trustee of Science for Humanity, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to bring together scientists, NGOs and local communities to develop and deliver innovative, science-based applications, which bring tangible benefits to people in the developing world.
